Favorite Fictional Characters

I came across a post on a board asking people what their favorite fictional characters are.  The following are mine:

Captain Jack Sparrow - I have loved Johnny Depp from the days of when he was on 21 Jump Street. He has tried to run from his looks by doing movies that were eclectic, not really box office draws. But then he gave up and went for broke and embodies this wonderful character. I loved the first Pirate movie, but what I enjoyed the most from the two sequels was Captain Jack Sparrow. I can't wait for the fourth installment.

Jack Shephard/John Locke - There will never be another Lost in my lifetime and I miss it terribly. That isn't to say that there won't be shows that are as good, but I just don't see myself caring as much about a group of characters as much as I did with Lost. All were unique and interesting, but ultimately it came down to Jack and Locke/Unlocke. Jack's transformation from a Man of Science to a Man of Faith was perfect and could not have occurred without Locke or Locke's death. It was ironic that in the end he had to kill someone who physically embodied the person who most influence Jack to change.

Eric Cartman - I remember reading an article in the EW Fall Preview before the first episode of South Park and thinking this could be really good. So I watched and fell in love with the whole thing, but ultimately it was Cartman that I loved. Cartman is the Archie Bunker of our times.

Scout Finch - To Kill a Mockingbird is one of my favorite movies and Scout is the reason why. She was portrayed perfectly by Mary Badham who after that role has done almost nothing. But what a legacy to have.

Scarlett O'Hara - For me, everything that made the movie great was Scarlett O'Hara portrayed to perfection by Vivien Leigh. The best scene which cemented it for me was when she showed up at Melanie's in the red velvet dress and stood there with head held high and dared them to say anything to her.

Bugs Bunny - I grew up watching Looney Toon cartoons every Saturday morning and I knew them all by heart but Bugs Bunny was the best of them all. The cartoons still stand up to this day.

Gollum - I first read the Lord of the Rings when I lived in Europe. I was working at a hotel in Southern Germany called Schloss Elmau. We had hitchhiked over to Zurich and I was in a book shop and saw the book and bought it. I have read it, I don't know how many times. Then the movies, perfect, absolutely perfect. So, who to chose from such a wonderful group of characters, all important. But ultimately I chose Gollum because he drove so much of the story from the perspective of The Ring. And without the ring, there is no story.

Clarice Starling/Hannibal Lector - I was living in Los Angeles when my cousin and I went to Century City Plaza to see The Silence of the Lambs when it was in limited release. We bought tickets to the only show still available at 10:00pm. We went to get seats 20 minutes before it would start and all that was left was the first row. What a perfect movie, perfect cast, everything was great. It was driven by the Clarice and Hannibal.

Andy DuFresne/Ellis Boyd "Red" Redding - I love Stephen King's books, the adaptations of his books into movies, not so much. For me personally, I have only loved two adaptations, both made from short stories from Different Seasons. The first was Stand By Me, made from the short story "The Body" and second The Shawshank Redemption made from the short story "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption". I can watch this movie any time it comes on and it is one my favorite movies of all time.

The Joker - I loved Jack Nicholson as The Joker, but then Heath Ledger came along and all other Joker's have been forgotten. What a package, I was thrilled that Heath Ledger won the Oscar for his portrayal but it was tinged with great sadness that it was posthumously.

Maximus/Bud White - I discovered Russel Crowe in a Denzel Washington movie called Virtuosity. He exudes violence and sexuality at the same time. Both characters are at once the same and the polar opposite of each other. The best line from Gladiator was "My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next. " I can watch that over and over. Bud White, so violent and so tender.   Each is honorable in their own way.

I could add so many more, but then this could become a book LOL.

I would be interested which are your favorites?
